How long have you been in the financial industry? What brought you to Charles Schwab’s Independent Branch Services?

I’ve been in the financial services industry for almost 20 years and I’ve been in the Citrus Park community for over 15. I’m passionate about advocating for local investors in Citrus Park and our surrounding communities. I admire how Schwab has been an advocate for the individual investor and the firm’s client-centric attitude. That really was the deciding factor when I was in the market for a new opportunity. I share Schwab’s belief that transparency and accountability are the cornerstones of strong relationships, and I believe that today’s investors deserve guidance on their own terms.

What makes your firm stand out in this industry?

We have a history of challenging the status quo in our industry, always looking for new ways to help investors and the advisors and employers who serve them. Chuck Schwab’s vision to be the champion of all investors is at the heart of everything we do – still to this day, Schwab looks for ways to offer our clients more value and a better experience. Our goal is to help people achieve better financial outcomes for themselves and their families.

What is your most important strategy for building wealth?

It’s difficult to make sound financial decisions without a plan that takes into account an individual’s situation and goals. We’ve seen that financial planning can help improve people’s confidence and help them achieve better outcomes. Charles Schwab’s Modern Wealth Index shows having a written financial plan can lead to better daily money behaviors: those with a written financial plan are more likely to be regular savers, feel financially stable and effectively manage their debt. When it comes to investing behavior, these planners are more likely to stay engaged with their investments, be aware of the fees they are paying, and have confidence about reaching their goals. That fact is that planning is critical to achieving any goal. It’s like establishing an exercise regimen to get in shape − we need to take the same approach to keep our finances in good health and on track.

What are some of the most pressing challenges facing the financial industry today? How do you help clients deal with these challenges?

Planning is critical to successful investing, but not enough people have a financial plan. The Modern Wealth Index found that among those without a written plan, 45 percent say it’s because they don’t think they have enough money to merit a formal plan. For some, the roadblock might be high costs and minimums; for others, planning may seem like a dull and daunting task. When people think about creating a financial plan, they envision long, uncomfortable meetings in a stuffy office. At Schwab, we’re making planning more accessible by lowering costs, simplifying the experience, offering digitized plans that make it easier to engage in real time, and having conversations that ignite people’s passions rather than boring them with tedious charts and numbers.

What’s the most common mistake people make with their money?

In a perfect world, every investor could ‘buy low and sell high,’ but the realities of the market often prove more complex. Still, many investors allow their emotions to steer them in the wrong direction. When the market is moving up, investors don’t want to be left out of the party so they tend to buy when prices are high. On the flip side, when the market experiences some volatility and declines,

Investors can get scared and end up selling. But building wealth is a long-term endeavor, and for long-term investors, time in the market is more important than timing the market.
