Late-night host Stephen Colbert is in recovery after undergoing surgery for a ruptured appendix, as he announced on Monday. This week’s episodes of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on CBS have been canceled to allow Colbert time to recuperate.
In social media posts, Colbert humorously addressed the situation, saying, “I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize?’ Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix. I’m grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the kids for putting up with me. Going forward, all emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas.”
A ruptured appendix, also referred to as a burst appendix, can lead to the spread of infection throughout the abdomen, a condition known as peritonitis. This condition is serious and requires immediate surgery to remove the appendix and clean the abdominal cavity.
No new episode was scheduled for Monday night, and upcoming guests included Jennifer Garner, director Baz Luhrmann, and guitarist John Scofield on Tuesday; Patrick Stewart and Jon Batiste on Wednesday; and Barbra Streisand and Kelsey Grammer on Thursday.
Colbert has been the host of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on CBS since 2015, following his tenure as the host of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” from 2005 to 2014.
