In 1975, the city collaborated with Janie’s Smyrna Surf Shack, Nichols Surf Shop, and Summer Breeze Surf Shop to organize its inaugural skateboard competition. This event took place on December 6 at Coronado Beach Elementary and attracted 25 participants.
Each participant contributed a $1 entry fee and participated in both slalom and freestyle events. The prizes, which included new skateboards and gift certificates, were generously provided by the three surf shops. This event represented a significant milestone in the city’s skateboarding culture.
To this day, the city continues to support skateboarding by offering updates on lessons and competitions through the NSB Skate Park’s Facebook page. The 1975 competition remains memorable, with images of participant Frank Kilman’s freestyle performance serving as a testament to the event’s lasting impact.
